"The
insane condition shows itself in a wonderful variety
of forms, and calls for a great variety of means in
treatment, - medical, moral, dietary, and hygiene. I
believe in sunshine, diet, air, cleanliness,
amusement, sleep, rest, and work. I use as few
mechanical restraints as possible, preferring to keep
more attendants in the wards than to tie or lock up
patients. I believe that patience and gentleness are
power."
